My research and teaching focuses on the legal, ethical, and policy implications of bioscience, biomedicine, and biotechnology research and innovation. I developed the concept of "fractious problems"— biopolicy problems that are novel, complex, ethically fraught, unavoidably of public concern, and unavoidably divisive. I propose a "navigational approach" to coping with these problems. My 2007 book, "The Ethics of Genetic Engineering," examines one of these fractious problems: the prospect of genetic engineering of human beings.
